Kitchen Refresh on a budget

Well this is not my normal post, but it is still craft related. We recently gave our kitchen and dining area a facelift on a budget and I am pleased how it turned out. We live in a older home and had some issues along the way, but still glad how it turned out.  The last time we remodeled it was about 13 or 14 years ago and the colors were very outdated.  Our cabinets were in good shape and so we just decided to paint them.  Now I should have took before pictures before we started making messes, but it is what it is.  The after pictures were taken this morning.  I am not sure why my pictures were looking crooked, but probably me this morning, bad shoulder from sleeping on it the wrong way. We bought all our supplies at Lowes because we have not much else in a small town!   

Tired and worn out looking honey stained cabinets with old green counter tops. Way outdated!

We had this island made for our kitchen a few years ago and it is really great, gives me lots of storage on the other side of it doors with drawers that slide out for lots of storage. Of course, green laminate again.

This is the dining room which is just opened up from the kitchen.  Wall paper and chair rail which is about the same age as the kitchen last remodeling.  Kind of dark like the kitchen.

Daughter in law gave me this plate rack which hung and I finally found a plate I like, was trying it out.  The furniture is oak and in great condition so could not change it .

The kitchen now how a nice bright feeling with the white cabinets and black counter tops.  I had recently painted the kitchen in a Churchill Hotel Maple color and just went into the dining room with that color too.  Actually, I love the color and have it in most of the downstairs.

 

Kitchen all finished and we added some rail along the top of the cabinets and the back splash is bead board and I love the look!

 

 

Dining room had bead board wall paper added at the bottom under chair rail.  We wanted to do real beadboard, but the wood work would have had to be changed out and was going to be a mess so we did the wall paper and painted it white and love how it turned out. 

 

This is the island make over.  Instead of covering it with laminate, we just gave it a couple coats of the Rustoleum counter top paint.  Quite smelly, but worked great and we love it.

Dining room is so much brighter even though it still has the dark furniture, but we love how it all came out and the good thing, even with buying new placemats and valances and a new light for the dining room, we spent under $1000.
